East of Eden

Exhibition: East of Eden
March 3rd – May 21st, 2011
Opening Reception: Thursday, March 10th, 2011, 6:00pm – 9:00pm

The Philadelphia Photo Arts Center is excited to announce East of Eden, a spring exhibition running from March 3rd to May 21st, featuring the work of Doug DuBois, Amy Stein and Mark Steinmetz. East of Eden investigates contemporary America through the lens of John Steinbeck’s canonical novel. The exhibition draws upon themes of the west as a place for transformation and prosperity, familial relationships, America on the brink of change, and the deterioration of the small town.

More than 58 years after its initial publication, the novel’s themes still resonate with great impact in a contemporary context. America itself has undergone a tremendous shift in the last few decades, similar to those in the novel. Rather than locate works that draw upon the time period staged in the novel, the photographs in the exhibition were all created within the last 20 years depicting a newer version of Steinbeck’s America fraught with parallel turbulence, doubt and uncertainty.

The Birds

I have seen the film Open Range with Kevin Costner. It is true that this might be a half decent Kevin Costner film. The only thing holding it back, in my opinion is the musical score. The score itself is too grand, similar to music maybe fit for a Walt Disney film.

In short, I felt I could make a much more interesting score for 'Open Range', only realizing that I can never get access to the film without the current musical score. However, I did the next best thing. I found a great film that has no musical score.

Sample 1

Influenced by Hitchcock's film The Birds, I have created a musical composition that reflects my love for the film. I have also been working to produce a special limited edition vinyl released via the notorious artist collective, 16 Pound Rabbit containing the musical score. I will be raising the money through a website called Kick Starter within the next month. This will help me pay for the record as well as sell to a few to people willing to donate a few cents.
