Exploiting the Earth’s resources for energy is part of what humans do. Recently, horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing technologies have demonstrated great promise in extracting natural gas from deep underground. These technologies rupture deep rock formations with the high-pressure injection of a mixture of water, sand and chemical additives, liberating the gas within. Fracturing these layers of rock is commonly called Hydrofracking or Fracking.

As with most energy extraction methods, controversy flourishes with hydrofracking. We need the energy… people need jobs & money… there are dangers… humans take shortcuts… tycoons abandon played out sites… etc. Fracking is no different, and has plenty of arguments coming from many perspectives.

Oil City, PA is in the middle of a large shale field being fracked called Marcellus. Because of our geography the local art community felt it was appropriate to invite artists to display their ideas on Fracking.

September 7th rain or shine, more than 1000 people marched down Broad Street in Philadelphia to protest the Drilling in Pennsylvania. The energy that was in the air was unbelievable. People of all races and backgrounds showed up. Some in extreme getups, others just in their ordinary clothes. With a police escort starting on Arch street, the group marched around Center City.

Before the march, notable speakers spoke out to the masses. These speakers included Josh Fox, the Director of Gasland, Craig & Julie Sautner residents of Dimock PA, Blondell Reynolds Brown, Philadelphia City Councilwoman, Curtis Jones, Philadelphia City Councilman, Doug Shields, Pittsburgh City Council President, Al Appleton, internationally respected water systems expert, Iris Marie Bloom, Protecting Our Waters, Tracy Carluccio, Delaware Riverkeeper Network, Jim Walsh, Food and Water Watch, David Braun, United for Action and many others.

State Rep. Ryan Aument hosted a public forum on Marcellus Shale on Tuesday, Aug. 23, at Centerville Middle School. The event was designed to give the public a chance to question lawmakers, industry reps and government officals on the safety of natural-gas drilling.

The Panel Representers were, David Spigelmyer who is Vice President of Goverment relastions at Chesapeake Energy, Mark Lauriello who is Preseident and CEO of Rettew Associates, Inc and Thomas Bergen from Heartman, Underhill & Brubaker LLP.

On the other side, we had George E. W. Love who is the Bureau DIrector & PA State Geologist, Jim Kline from the Department of Environmental Protection and John Arway, the Executive Director of PA Fish & Boat Commission.

John Arway was by far the most important speaker at the forum. The PA fish and Boat Commission are the current police of the Marcellus Shale Gas fields. Although if you ask Mr. Arway he will tell you that policing the fields is not what his department should be doing. In his eye, the gas industry should be more like the oil and coal. They should be responsible and able to clean up there own mistakes. Heavily underfunded, the PA Fish and Boat commission run around and inspect every environmental disaster left by Marcellus Shale. The only real source of funding they receive is through the purchase of fishing licenses. They are usually too late going to locations to stop any contamination. Since running all over the fields the Pa fish and boat commission cannot focus on their real jobs, which is to watch and protect people on the waterways, especially around the holidays.

The Project

Influenced by Alfred Hitchcock's film The Birds, I have created a musical composition that reflects my love for the film. I would like to produce a special limited edition vinyl released through the notorious artist collective, 16 Pound Rabbit containing the musical score. I will be raising the money through Kick Starter. This will help me pay for the record as well as sell a few to people willing to donate.

I have always been intrigued with Hitchcock's films, as he is the master of horror. His films are artistically rendered and adding a score would only enhance the disturbing and dismal qualities of the film.

If you are a Hitchcock fan, a soundtrack enthusiast or can simply appreciate the artistic aspect of a project like this, please help me release my project.

Special Screening

On Friday June 3rd, Painted Desert Gallery will be doing a special screening of The Birds with my film score. The first showing will start at 5:30pm, and the second showing will start at 7:40pm. We will have 20 chairs set up for those who wish to stay for the full movie and standing room for those who just want to stop by and check it out. I will also be showing some limited edition photographs of crows that I have taken as well as an eerie bird video installation I have filmed.

In the 1950s, when Werner Herzog was 13, he was sharing an apartment with Klaus Kinski, an ego-maniacal live-wire. In an unabated, 48 hour fit of rage, Kinski destroyed every piece of furniture in sight. From this chaos, a beautiful albeit volatile partnership was born. In 1972, Herzog cast Kinski in Aguirre, The Wrath of God. Four more films would follow. The Philadelphia Photo Arts Center is excited to announce East of Eden, a spring exhibition running from March 3rd to May 21st, featuring the work of Doug DuBois, Amy Stein and Mark Steinmetz. East of Eden investigates contemporary America through the lens of John Steinbeck’s canonical novel. The exhibition draws upon themes of the west as a place for transformation and prosperity, familial relationships, America on the brink of change, and the deterioration of the small town.

More than 58 years after its initial publication, the novel’s themes still resonate with great impact in a contemporary context. America itself has undergone a tremendous shift in the last few decades, similar to those in the novel. Rather than locate works that draw upon the time period staged in the novel, the photographs in the exhibition were all created within the last 20 years depicting a newer version of Steinbeck’s America fraught with parallel turbulence, doubt and uncertainty.

I have seen the film Open Range with Kevin Costner. It is true that this might be a half decent Kevin Costner film. The only thing holding it back, in my opinion is the musical score. The score itself is too grand, similar to music maybe fit for a Walt Disney film.

In short, I felt I could make a much more interesting score for 'Open Range', only realizing that I can never get access to the film without the current musical score. However, I did the next best thing. I found a great film that has no musical score.

A few decades after the destruction of the Inca empire, a Spanish expedition leaves the mountains of Peru and goes down the Amazon river in search of gold and wealth. Soon, they come across great difficulties and Don Aguirres, a ruthless man who cares only about riches, becomes their leader.

Another great Klaus Kinski role. I still lean towards Fitzcarraldo as my favorite Herzog/Kinski collaboration.

This film has a fantastic opening shot.

Upon my vehicle inspection last week, I was told I can no longer drive my truck. The under body is completely rusted out. My truck is the only way I can travel to continue photographing. Due to numerous school loans, I can not afford to buy a new or used vehicle. I have decided to do a print sale in which all the proceeds will go towards a used car of some kind. Homer City Generating Station is a 2-GW coal-burning power station near Homer City, in Indiana County, Pennsylvania, USA. It is owned by Edison International and operated by its subsidiary Midwest Generation. Units 1 and 2, rated at 660 MWe, were launched into operation in 1969. Unit 3, rated at 692 MWe nameplate capacity, was launched in 1977. It employs about 260 people, and generates enough electricity to supply two million households.

João Silva, 44, a South African photographer on contract with The New York Times, stepped on a mine while accompanying American soldiers patrolling an area near the town of Arghandab in southern Afghanistan on October 23rd, 2010. Despite immediate help from medics, both his legs were lost below the knees.

Tower City PA

Tower City was founded by and named for Charlemagne Tower, a New York–born lawyer who had come to Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania in 1846 to work with the legal issues regarding land claims to large coal and mineral deposits in that area. His first Pennsylvania practice was located in Orwigsburg, and then relocated to Pottsville in 1850 when it was made the Schyulkill County seat.

Not long after Tower came to Pottsville, he began furiously purchasing and clearing liens to lands containing large anthracite deposits in and around Schuylkill County. This was part of an elaborate land grab scheme devised by Tower and his partner, Alfred Munson of Utica, NY.

The plan called for Tower to use his legal acumen to clear all the liens and opposing claims to the 8 thousand acre (32 km²) Munson-Williams claim, and to all the land around it. In short, the partners hoped to create a single landed estate, which would have measured 65 miles by 4½ miles (105 km by 7 km) at its widest point in southwest Schuylkill County. In return, Tower was to receive ownership and title to one half of all the land acquired once all the cost to Munson had been settled, or until Tower paid him half the value of the total land purchase.

Esther Mathis uses light not as an instrument of sight, but as a ﬁeld in which she generates the loss and disappearance of her subjects, or cultivates their possible, sometimes disturbing, re-appearance. “Being blind in a white world where light does not help to see” in the fog which covers the distant subjects of remote landscapes, is a condition for the establishment of relationships, feelings, suspended participations and subtle losses of consciousness. Snow is a metaphor for solitude and the inner condition of waiting, just as the body, immersed in complete darkness, sinks into a slow and inexorable disappearance of the visible. It is to create emptiness to start all over again, or to lose oneself and disappear forever along the path of total whiteness, into abolute darkness.

Inspired in part by Lindsay Lohan’s grotesquely fascinating black hole existence and in part by my unwavering belief in the power of pop music as an artform, I saw an opportunity to create something interesting with her music, and decided to ask some friends to reinterpret some of Lindsay’s songs. “Tri Angle Records Presents: Let Me Shine for You” is the result. Even though we are all fond of Lindsay in our own ways, there is no FREE LINDSAY agenda here. We all love pop music and this is merely an experiment. All of our intentions are very sincere.

This large facility was once the largest coal breaker in the world, at one time producing 12,500 tons of coal per day. Here is a brief history of the place thanks to wikipedia.

The Old St. Nicholas Breaker, located just outside of Mahanoy City, was constructed in 1930 and began operating in 1932. Half of the village of Suffolk was relocated in order to create room for Reading Anthracite’s Old St. Nicholas Breaker, the largest coal breaker in the world. 20 miles (32 km) of railroad track were laid, 3,800 tons of steel and more than 10,000 cubic yards (7,600 m3) of concrete were used. A mile and a half of conveyor lines, 25 miles (40 km) of conduit, 26,241 square feet (2,437.9 m2) of rubber belting, 118 miles (190 km) of wire and cable and 20 miles (32 km) of pipe were installed. When the breaker was constructed it was divided into two sides. Each side could be operated independently, producing 12,500 tons of coal a day. Once the raw coal enters the production process within the breaker it took just 12 minutes to pass through the entire breaker. For 31 years, the Old St. Nicholas Breaker prepared all sizes of famous Reading Anthracite for the markets of the world.

Last Saturday I had the chance to meet with Klaus Grutzka. I was introduced by Ralph Lindsay. Klaus served in the German navy during WW2 as an engineer on a submarine. When he lived in Munich he saw Hitler twice. Klaus says he inherited his artistic talents from his father. Klaus has worked as an artist in Germany and the states. He has done art work for General Electric, Exxon, and many American Steel Company's.

The few remaining residents of a Pennsylvania coal town decimated by a 48-year-old underground mine fire claim in court papers that a "massive fraud" is being perpetrated against Centralia by parties seeking to grab the mineral rights to hundreds of millions of dollars worth of coal.

In a filing late Monday, four property owners and the borough asked a state appeals court to block Pennsylvania officials from seizing their homes. The state condemned the homes in the early 1990s but only recently moved to oust the remaining holdouts.
Centralia all but ceased to exist in the 1980s as the mine fire spread underneath homes and businesses. More than 1,000 people moved out.

The holdouts say they have evidence that the fire isn't a threat and may never have endangered the town.
